Do we still need religion?

 2022-09-15

Do we still need religion?

Do we still need religion?

The big idea: do we still need religion?

Mon 28 Mar 2022 12.30 BST

In 2018, archaeologists moving bodies for reburial from a 19th-century cemetery in Birmingham to make way for the new HS2 station were puzzled to find several that had plates on their laps. Then someone remembered a curious custom from the nearby Welsh Marches – that of the village “sin-eater”. A plate of bread and salt would be placed on the deceased’s lap while they were lying in repose. Just before the coffin was closed and the funeral cortege set off for the church, the village sin-eater arrived, ate the bread and was given some coins and a glass of ale for their trouble. The belief was that the deceased’s sins were absorbed by the salt and transferred into the bread, and then into the sin-eater.

Sin-eaters were usually elderly and destitute, and glad to have the money – not to mention the free food and drink. The price they paid was to be shunned by their community because of their macabre associations. The last known sin-eater was Richard Munslow, who died aged 73 in 1906. Sin-eating reminds us that, more than anything else, even the most staid of religions – in this case, Anglicanism – can be associated with surprisingly curious beliefs and rituals.

Perhaps because of this, it has often been claimed that religious belief arises from ignorance and superstition. If that were the case, you might expect religion to gradually fade away as societies became better educated and more scientifically oriented.

There are at least two reasons, however, why religions persist. One is the fact that, on average, religious people are generally happier, healthier and live longer. For better or for worse, they also have easier deaths when the time comes. The other is that religious people are more likely to feel that they belong to a community. In a survey I ran, those who reported attending religious services were depressed less frequently, felt their lives were more worthwhile, were more engaged with their local community, and felt greater trust towards others. These enormous benefits mean not only that religion has enduring appeal, but that religious practices make you “fit” in the evolutionary sense – and thus they tend to stick around.

Part of the reason people are attracted to religion is that its rituals – the standing, sitting and kneeling in unison, the singing, the listening to emotionally rousing sermons – trigger the brain’s endorphin system. This is the mechanism that underpins social bonding in all primates, including humans. Like opiates, endorphins produce a sense of bliss bordering on ecstasy, calmness and warmth, relaxation and trust, while elevating pain thresholds. In addition to these hedonic benefits, endorphins trigger the release of natural killer cells (part of the body’s immune system).

Endorphins also underpin the bonding of friendships and, through that, allow us to create supportive groups of like-minded individuals. This effect seems to be especially strong in the context of rituals, as has been shown experimentally in religious services in the UK and Brazil. It seems, therefore, that religions evolved to reinforce a sense of community cohesion, something that’s extremely important to our wellbeing and survival.

A penchant for religion is part of our genetic inheritance

Our natural community size – the size of our personal social network, the number of friends we have on Facebook – is part of a relationship between group size and brain size in primates. Each species has a characteristic group size determined by the size of its brain. Ours is about 150. Not only is this the average size of personal social networks (the number of extended family and friends with whom you have meaningful relationships), but it also turns out to be the optimal size for religious congregations. If a congregation is smaller than about 100, it puts a heavy burden on the membership; if it is above about 200, it becomes increasingly prone to divisiveness. This seems to explain why big religions are so susceptible to fragmentation – constantly throwing up small sects (typically of a few hundred people at most) built round a charismatic leader whose wayward beliefs the hierarchy desperately tries to contain.

Social bonding is important, of course, to many species. But there’s an aspect of religion that seems to be peculiarly human. Being able to engage in religious discussion – and hence explain the significance of the rituals and why you should take part – depends on the kinds of mind-reading, or “mentalising”, skills that play a crucial role in managing our everyday relationships. These are the skills that allow us to understand what someone else is thinking, to grasp their intentions. They allow us to utter sentences such as, “I know that you realise that Freddie believes that …”

To be able to do this, I have to be able to step back from the immediacy of the physical world so as to imagine the possibility that you might or might not think this, that Freddie might or might not intend whatever you thought he did, and even whether the person Freddie had in mind did or did not think what Freddie thought they did. Apes can do the first two steps in this chain, but that’s the limit. For humans, it comes easily, bringing with it an ability to imagine parallel worlds inhabited by invisible beings. It’s a short step from there to religious ideas, which in turn lead to better bonding, which makes you more likely to survive. Survival means your superior mentalising skills will be passed on to a new generation, equally adept at religious thinking; a penchant for religion is therefore part of our genetic inheritance.

But that’s not all. The same cognitive abilities that give us religion also allow us to ask why the world has to be the way it is (giving us science) and to imagine entirely fictional worlds (giving us literature). Thus, you could no more have a world where religion was cast aside as superstition than you could have one without science or stories. And that would be a very different world indeed.

That can be seen as refusal/ inability to take responsibility rather than  surrender.

But what about God?.He ,Himself is a victim of religions.

Do we need a national story?

Do we need a national story?

It is time to grow up!

Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind.

The big idea: do we need a national story?

Patriotic tales are easy enough to debunk. That doesn’t make them irrelevant

Mon 13 Dec 2021 09.00 GMT
We’ve heard much about the importance of stories in recent years. It has been said that Vote Leave won the Brexit referendum because they told a better story than Remain; that Donald Trump won the US election in 2016 because he told a better story than Hillary Clinton, and lost in 2020 because his story fell apart. Some think the Labour party has struggled to turn the tide decisively against a corrupt, chaotic government because it doesn’t have a clear story to tell.

Stories have been central to community organisation for as long as communities have been organised. As Nesrine Malik writes in her insightful collection of essays, We Need New Stories: “Every social unit, from the family to the nation state, functions on the basis of mythology, stories that set them apart from others.” National stories can support any viewpoint: left or rightwing, liberal or authoritarian. They are integral to nationalism and represent a form of identity politics. While many across the political spectrum dislike nationalism and identity politics, the world is mostly made up of nation states. Unless that changes, those nations will continue to be part of how we identify ourselves – whether or not we embrace or reject their dominant values. Politicians of all stripes ignore the power of national stories at their cost.
National stories may encompass science, the arts and religion, yet they are rooted in history: they create a narrative of how a nation, uniquely, was formed. These stories are always exceptionalist, suggesting that “our” nation is different from (and usually superior to) others. They are intended to exclude as much as they are intended to unite.

In Britain, there have been many attempts to construct national mythologies from a complex and chequered history. Our Island Story by HE Marshall, first published in 1905, is still often referenced today; in 2010, the then prime minister David Cameron named it his favourite childhood book.

Marshall emphasised that Our Island Story “is not a history lesson, but a storybook”. She advised her young readers: “I hope you will not put this beside your school books, but quite at the other end of the shelf, beside Robinson Crusoe and A Noah’s Ark Geography.” Whether or not this advice was effective, many of them internalised her depiction of an exceptional ascent to greatness.

National stories are not set in stone. In fact, comparing different versions written decades or centuries apart can reveal dramatic shifts. In 1746, the Duke of Cumberland, son of George II, defeated Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite rebels at Culloden. Cumberland ordered “no quarter” be given to Jacobite survivors. Slaughter ensued. In the immediate aftermath of his bloody triumph, Cumberland was hailed as a “Hero-God” in England (and in much of lowland Scotland). He was burnished as an icon of progressive British liberty against the regressive, superstitious authoritarianism of the Catholic Stuarts. The Highlanders and Jacobites who had fought him were represented, in the words of historian Murray Pittock, “as savages to be tamed”. Handel wrote his famous oratorio chorus “See, the conqu’ring hero comes!” in Cumberland’s honour.

A century later, everything had changed. Queen Victoria was then on the throne: she adored Scotland, and Highlanders particularly. The truth about Culloden was now well known. Victoria’s great-grand-uncle, the Duke of Cumberland, was no longer seen as the “godlike youth” of Handel’s chorus, but as the “Butcher of Culloden”: a monster, a villain, an embarrassment.

The national story changed to accommodate this. Cumberland’s statue in London was removed in 1868. Victoria herself is thought to have ordered the erasure of the word “Culloden” from his memorial obelisk in Windsor Great Park. In 1856, a popular history book, The Comprehensive History of England, claimed that Cumberland “left behind him in Scotland the name of the Butcher, and the people of England, disgusted sooner than any other with cruelty, confirmed this title to the hero of Culloden”. The story continued to be one of British and English exceptionalism, modernity and unity. The difference was that in 1746 these values had been demonstrated by the English people celebrating Cumberland, whereas by 1856 they were demonstrated by their rejecting him.

So, while national stories may be rooted in history, they are not history. As the historian Richard Evans has said: “History isn’t a myth-making discipline, it’s a myth-busting discipline.” The process of historical inquiry inevitably challenges national stories. It is, therefore, often seen as a threat by their proponents: witness the recent attacks on the National Trust for stating some discomfiting facts about the links of some of its properties to colonialism and historic slavery in an academically rigorous report.

National stories are propaganda, fairytales, superhero origin stories. They are supposed to unite, and exclude, through belief. As with all forms of faith, true believers will defend them vigorously. In repressive societies, this defence of faith often prevails over historical research and analysis. Societies that are more at ease with themselves are generally much less anxious about the truth coming out.

It is possible to tell national stories that are sober and restrained; that speak of shared liberal values, democracy, artistic and scientific achievement, diversity of views or identities. Fundamentally, they are still fictions. Those who tell them will pride themselves on the unique sophistication of their own grown-up national stories compared to everyone else’s absurd delusions, thus neatly reinforcing the paradigm of exceptionalism yet again.

Perhaps one day someone will find a more compelling story to tell beyond nationalism, and national stories will cease to have such a hold on us. For the moment, they are with us, whether we feel we “need” them or not. So long as this holds true, it is important to recognise that the prejudices within them are never fixed. Every generation interrogates and questions what it is told: the stories must adapt. The enduring popularity of myths may frustrate historians, but we can comfort ourselves that those myths are always in flux. It’s a sign of health if our societies are open to change; if we never entirely agree.

Thol:

We are already / always home!

Shan: And where did the water come from? Sun?

They are similar but not identical.

Particularly for the nameless / formless reality of reality there can be nothing to compare. Because, anything said / compared is within the same reality.

This is one of the important conceptual obstacles to see through to 'get' it. There are other conceptual obstacles like 'sense-of-separation', 'words-are-not-what-they-stand-for' etc.

Shan:
A lot of assumptions. Nameless / formless reality? I'm sure you know about the pink elephant which is invisible except for those who 'get' it.

It is a tautology. So, can't be argued.

Yes, you are right. It can't be argued. It is either seen or not seen; 'got' or 'not-got'; cannot be given as there is nothing to give. In fact, there is no need to 'get' it unless one wants to. One needs to follow the pointers not argue with the sign posts to get to the destination. You are using all the correct words but... not getting the meaning.😌

Let us, for the sake, take the example of someone claiming to see a pink elephant in the room but others are not 'get'ting it.

There is a shared / deeper hallucination and unshared (personal) / shallower hallucination which has been explained in our email exchanges.

So, someone seeing a pink elephant when others are not, is a personal / shallower hallucination.

There are many shared visual illusions (plenty online).

There is synesthesia where one sees specific colours for each number and many more like that.

All such examples can make one curious to investigate...

“When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called a Religion.”

Shan:
Not got because it's not there? Is that not something one should consider?

Yes, it is a possibility. To rule it out is a sloppy thinking and not ruling it in and investigating indicates many things: not-passionate, not-curious, not-open, not-ready, conceptual imprisonment, hold of existing beliefs, intellectual laziness (this is definitely not in your case)....

Shan:
When one person suffers from delusion and thinks he has found the truth, he is a spiritual master.
-- Shanmugananda

While the statement is (kind of)  true, the assumption that it is just one person is totally wrong and selecting data according to one's bias.

There is no spiritual master here and anywhere. There are, of course, fakes aplenty; even in Gopal tooth powder So, anybody who understood it, claimed, that there is nothing to get it and everybody is already so. Only when someone seeks they point it out. That is why there is no need to get it, unless one wants to.

I have no special knowledge or revelation. All I do (did) is to connect the dots of freely, openly available knowledge and day-to-day experience.

The age of 'guru / master' is fading away. It is more of friends sharing, the current trend.

“The law of gravity and gravity itself did not exist before Isaac Newton." ...and what that means is that that law of gravity exists nowhere except in people's heads! It 's a ghost!"

Mind has no matter or energy but they can't escape its predominance over everything they do. Logic exists in the mind. numbers exist only in the mind. I don't get upset when scientists say that ghosts exist in the mind. it's that only that gets me. science is only in your mind too, it's just that that doesn't make it bad. or ghosts either."
Laws of nature are human inventions, like ghosts. Law of logic, of mathematics are also human inventions, like ghosts."

...we see what we see because these ghosts show it to us, ghosts of Moses and Christ and the Buddha, and Plato, and Descartes, and Rousseau and Jefferson and Lincoln, on and on and on. Isaac Newton is a very good ghost. One of the best. Your common sense is nothing more than the voices of thousands and thousands of these ghosts from the past.”
― Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values

“But to tear down a factory or to revolt against a government or to avoid repair of a motorcycle because it is a system is to attack effects rather than causes; and as long as the attack is upon effects only, no change is possible. The true system, the real system, is our present construction of systematic thought itself, rationality itself, and if a factory is torn down but the rationality which produced it is left standing, then that rationality will simply produce another factory. If a revolution destroys a systematic government, but the systematic patterns of thought that produced that government are left intact, then those patterns will repeat themselves in the succeeding government. There’s so much talk about the system. And so little understanding.”
― Robert M Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values

It is the pattern / habit of thought that is the root cause of personal as well as social problems / suffering and to change that is the proper solution.

The power of knowledge is the power to transform the persons who has gained that knowledge - to change the person's thoughts and actions; if this doesn't happen it is just intellectual and superfluous; can be used to cheat oneself and others and that happens a lot.
