Excerpts:

IS THERE A GOD? - Brief Answers to the Big Questions - Stephen Hawking

Cosmic cookbook

1. The first is matter—stuff that has mass.

2. The second is energy

3. The third thing we need to build a universe is space.

So where could all this matter, energy and space come from?

insights of  Albert Einstein.  Einstein realised something quite extraordinary: that two of the main ingredients needed to make a universe —mass and energy—are basically the same thing, two sides of the same coin if you like. His famous equation E = mc(2)  simply means that mass can be thought

of as a kind of energy, and vice versa. So instead of three ingredients, we can now say that the universe has just two: energy and space.

where did all this energy and space come from?  - Big Bang.

The secret lies in one of the strangest facts about our cosmos. The laws of physics demand the existence of something called “negative energy.

Simple analogy

Imagine a man wants to build a hill on a flat piece of land. The hill will represent the universe. To make this hill he digs a hole in the ground and uses that soil to dig his hill. But of course he’s not just making a hill —he’s also making a hole, in effect a negative version of the hill. The stuff that

was in the hole has now become the hill, so it all perfectly balances out. This is the principle behind what happened at the beginning of the universe.

When the Big Bang produced a massive amount of positive energy, it simultaneously produced the same amount of negative energy. In this way, the positive and the negative add up to zero, always. It’s another law of nature.

So where is all this negative energy today? It’s in the third ingredient in our cosmic cookbook: it’s in space.

This may sound odd, but according to the laws of nature concerning gravity and motion—laws that are among the oldest in science—space itself is a vast store of negative energy. Enough to ensure that everything adds up to zero.

The positive side of things—the mass and energy we see today—is like the hill. The corresponding hole, or

negative side of things, is spread throughout space.

So what does this mean in our quest to find out if there is a God? It means that if the universe adds up to nothing, then you don’t need a God to create it. The universe is the ultimate free lunch.

When people ask me if a God created the universe, I tell them that the question itself makes no sense. Time didn’t exist before the Big Bang so there is no time for God to make the universe in. It’s like asking for directions to the edge of the Earth—the Earth is a sphere that doesn’t have an edge, so looking for it is a futile exercise.

Finally

No heaven and afterlife either. when we die we return to dust.  we live on, in our influence, and in our genes that we pass on to our children.

Thol:

Yes, there is no need for a God to create the universe.

Because universe is not created. It IS. It appears to be created in our model of the universe. Only our model (our interpretation of our observation and calculation) suggests that the universe was created. Universe doesn't come to us and say that it was created in our direct experience.

We confuse the model with the reality.

One may say all we have is model; all we can have is model; all we can ever hope to have is model. That may be so. But, that doesn't make the model = reality.

According to Hawking's logic (that a hole is created when a mountain is built), big bang should have a counterpart of big crunch. Where is it? How to verify?

We forget that the laws of physics will not create the universe or anything for that matter. The laws of physics (or chemistry...) are our models built on our observations. Of course it is verified and confirmed by predicting based on the model. That only verifies our model and says nothing about what and how things really ARE.

Big bang itself is a model (projected calculation) based on our observations.

We will never confuse a map of Chennai with actual Chennai. If a map of Chennai helps me correctly to find a street / house, I will not assume that the map is Chennai. But, we readily assume our model of reality is the reality!

Book extract:

Materialism and science

It is important to keep in mind the difference between materialism as a metaphysics and scientific theories as models. Many people – including many scientists – easily confuse the two, mistakenly construing the empirical evidence collected from nature through the scientific method to lend direct support to the materialist metaphysics. Were that to be so, materialism wouldn’t be a psychosocial phenomenon, but a scientific conclusion. However, that is not so. Empirical data proves the models of science under certain conditions, not the metaphysical interpretation of such models. Allow me to elaborate on this.

The scientific method allows us to study and model the observable patterns and regularities of nature. For instance, the observation that objects consistently fall when dropped – a regularity observed anywhere on the surface of the planet – allows us to infer the law of gravity. The observation that crystals form according to symmetrical shapes allows us to infer specific patterns of crystallization for different materials. By observing the consistency of these patterns and regularities, we can create mathematical models capturing them, run such models as computer simulations, and then predict how similar phenomena will unfold in the future. Such an ability to model and predict the phenomena of nature lies at the heart of the technological prowess of our civilization and represents the main social value-add of science.

But our ability to model the patterns and regularities of reality tells us little about the underlying nature of things. Scientific modeling is useful for informing us how one thing or phenomenon relates to another thing or phenomenon – this being precisely what mathematical equations do – but it cannot tell us what these things or phenomena fundamentally are in and by themselves. The reason is simple: science can only explain one thing in terms of another thing; it can only explicate and characterize a certain phenomenon in terms of its relative differences with respect to another phenomenon.

For instance, it only makes sense to characterize a positive electric charge relative to a negative electric charge; positive charges are defined in terms of their differences of behavior when compared to the behavior of negative charges, and the other way around. Another example: science can explain a body in terms of tissues; tissues in terms of cells; cells in terms of molecules; molecules in terms of atoms; and atoms in terms of subatomic particles. But then it can only explain one subatomic particle in terms of another, by highlighting their relative differences. Science cannot explain the fundamental nature of what a subatomic particle is in itself, since all scientific explanations need a frame of reference to provide contrasts.

Capturing the observable patterns and regularities of the elements of reality, relative to each other, is an empirical and scientific question. But pondering about the fundamental nature of these elements is not; it is a philosophical question. The problem is that, in recent decades, scientists who have little or no understanding of philosophy have begun to believe that science alone can replace philosophy. This dangerous combination of ignorance and hubris has done our culture an enormous disservice, which was exacerbated by the fact that scientists are over-represented in our society’s acknowledged intellectual elite, to the detriment of artists, poets, psychologists, philosophers, etc.

Childishly emboldened by the technological success achieved by our civilization, many scientists have begun to believe that the scientific method suffices to provide us with a complete account of the nature of existence – that is, with a complete ontology. In doing so, they have failed to see that they are simply assuming a certain metaphysics – namely, materialism – without giving it due thought. They have failed to see that the ability to predict how things behave with respect to one another says little about what things fundamentally are.

We, as a society, are guilty, by ignorance or omission, of allowing science to outreach its boundaries on the basis of the equivocated assumption that technological prowess is proof of some deep scientific understanding of the underlying nature of reality. Let us put this in context with an analogy: one needs to know nothing about computer architecture or software in order to play a computer game well and even win; just watch a five-year-old kid. Playing a computer game only requires an ability to understand and predict how the elements of the game behave relative to one another: if your character shoots that spot, it scores points; if your character touches that wall, it dies; etc. It requires no understanding whatsoever of the underlying machine and code upon which the game runs. You can be a champion player without having a clue about Central Processing Units (CPU), Random-Access Memories (RAM), Universal Serial Buses (USB), or any of the esoteric computer engineering that makes the game possible. All this engineering transcends the ‘reality’ accessible empirically from within the game.

Yet, the scientific method limits itself to what is empirically and ordinarily observed from within the ‘game’ of reality. Scientific modeling requires little or no understanding of the underlying nature of reality in exactly the same way that a gamer needs little or no understanding of the computer’s underlying architecture in order to win the game. It only requires an understanding of how the elements of the ‘game,’ accessed empirically from within the ‘game’ itself, unfold relative to one another.

On the other hand, to infer things about what underlies the ‘game’ – in other words, to construct a metaphysics about the fundamental nature of reality – demands more than the empirical methods of science. Indeed, it demands a kind of disciplined introspection that critically assesses not only the elements observed, but also the observer, the process of observation, and the interplay between the three in a holistic manner; an introspection that, as such, seeks to see through the ‘game.’ The construction of a metaphysics demands, thus, the methods of philosophy.

Our culture has become so blindly enamored with technology that we allowed science, on the basis of a misunderstanding, to be overrepresented in our intellectual elite. The damaging consequences of this mistake are felt with increasing intensity in the culture, in the form of a materialist paradigm that, while unsubstantiated – as I will attempt to show in this and subsequent chapters – dissolves all meaning and hope out of human life. It is time we corrected this.

It is time we understood that physics, while valuable and extremely important, just models the elements of the ‘game’: where to shoot, which wall to avoid, etc. The true underlying nature of reality – the inner workings of the computer running the game – is an issue of metaphysics; an issue of philosophy. It  requires different methods to be properly assessed and understood.

For as long as scientists like Stephen Hawking (sender's note: he claimed philosophy is dead) are allowed to make preposterous pseudo-philosophical pronouncements and not be either ignored or thoroughly ridiculed by the mainstream media – in exactly the same way that, say, a famous artist would be ridiculed or ignored for making pseudo-scientific statements – our culture will fail to understand the nature of our predicament.
    - Book: Why Materialism Is Baloney
    - Author: Bernardo Kastrup

From the Foreword to the above book:

As such, it is regrettable that some practitioners of science – and even some philosophers of science – have now taken on the attitude that scientism is the only valid approach to
human knowledge. The idea that science, and science alone, exhausts the human potential has grown into a boy too big for his britches. Behind this monstrous presumption is the highly metaphysical view of materialism. One should make no mistake here: metaphysical beliefs distort science, for any kind of metaphysics is, in and of itself, contradictory to science’s own purposes as an open-ended search for truth. That does not mean a scientist cannot have a metaphysical view; but this view cannot impinge on the interpretation of  observations. Scientism today is doing what the Church did in the fifteenth century: forcing theory to fit a predetermined metaphysics.

In the pursuit of an external truth, scientistic materialism has forgotten the internal, most fundamental reality of human existence: we can know nothing but that which appears in our own mind. Our mind is our reality and, when we attempt to reify either the subject or the object, we chase our own tail at light speed. The ontological vertigo produced by this exercise has extended to the point where materialist philosophers, such as Daniel Dennett, Owen Flannigan, and Pamela and Paul Churchland, tell us that consciousness itself does not exist. And, as if this were not enough, they utter this pronouncement with the smugness and self-assuredness of a Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell.

How can anyone of us take seriously someone who stands up and pronounces that his or her own mind does not exist? Truly, this is a kōan worthy of a Zen Patriarch. It is, in fact, the very opposite of not only Buddhist thinking, but also common sense. And not a common sense based merely on the obvious, but on the most primal reality of the
human condition.

Morality - Advaithi

Shan:

"Morality, as far as I could see, originates in atheism and the realisation that no higher power is coming along to feed the hungry or lift the fallen. Mercy is left entirely to us."

    - Barbara Ehrenreich

Thol:

I searched and found the above quote in this 'edited extract from Living With A Wild God: A Non-Believer's Search For The Truth About Everything, by Barbara Ehrenreich'.

As many times stressed in our discussions, what we make of our experience is the difference. Similar 'mystical' (as Barbara had when she was 17) experiences led other people to pursue a different path and they made sense of their experiences in a completely different way. Which or who is right? Under one interpretation of such experience questions (and answers) like this, will drop away.

"Ah, you say, this is all in your mind. And you are right to be sceptical; I expect no less. It is in my mind, which is a less than perfect instrument. But this is what appears to be the purpose of my mind, and no doubt yours as well, its designated function beyond all the mundane calculations: to condense all the chaos and mystery of the world into a palpable Other or Others, not necessarily because we love it, and certainly not out of any intention to "worship" it. But because ultimately we may have no choice in this matter. I have the impression, growing out of the experiences chronicled here, that it may be seeking us out." (last paragraph from the above extract)

I would like to end the above as '... IT (nature) is seeking it-self out'.

Shan (as he told me) had a few 'mystical' experiences. I had none. But, as I explored and connected the dots, I understood every experience is special; if one wants to call them 'mystical', they are.

The experience is the only reality we have. What we infer from that varies. Finding out which inference makes sense, simple, parsimonious etc is like a detective work. You don't conclude your investigation with just one evidence / pointer / circumstantial match / gut feeling... You need many and they should back up each other / hang together in a consistent way. As Sherlock Holmes would say, 'When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth'.

The logical analysis part of Advaita is doing the same by eliminating one by one as (neti neti - not this, not that) like you are not the body, you are not the mind...

***

As to the quote ("Morality, as far as I could see, originates in atheism and the realisation that no higher power is coming along to feed the hungry or lift the fallen."), it is a bit disappointing that a well thinking author could not see that belief or disbelief in God may or may not be the source of one's morality. An atheist can be immoral and a theist can be moral and vice versa. This is our day to day experience.
===========

Morality (from Latin: moralitas, lit. 'manner, character, proper behavior') is the differentiation of intentions, decisions and actions between those that are distinguished as proper (right) and those that are improper (wrong).[1] Morality can be a body of standards or principles derived from a code of conduct from a particular philosophy, religion or culture, or it can derive from a standard that a person believes should be universal.[2] Morality may also be specifically synonymous with "goodness" or "rightness".
===========

Though morality can be derived from many (second order) sources like philosophy, religion, culture etc., ultimately all of them evolved for and by our social-living (சமூக வாழ்க்கை) . So, that is its real source (origin).

***

Thanks to Shan for sending this quote and helping me learn about this. It is good we have a talented opponent (in understanding the nature of reality) in our group to stimulate exploration.

Even though I would like Shan to appreciate the logical consistency in my writings, I much prefer he doesn't agree with me and keep throwing challenges!

2022-03-01

Shan:

I need to explain the mystical experiences I have had. Typically, my state of mind is driven by external events. I feed happy if read a good book, eat good food, when near the sea, etc. Similarly I feel sad when something bad happens. Non-typically, I also feel sad or happy without any external triggers. In almost all such cases, the cause was not proximate but happened a few hours or even a few days ago. A careful analysis of my state of mind reveals the cause and the causal chain for the state of my mind.

There are very few exceptions to this and these are what I consider 'mystical' experiences. Without going into details of these experiences, there experiences are also based on certain physical things except that the causal connection is not well established. I am not converting these mystical experiences into quotidian events for the sake of argument. I do consider them exceptional events. At the same time, I have reasons to believe that these are based on physical events and nothing more.

I do appreciate the logical consistency of your conjectures. Here are a few more logically consistent conjectures that are not disprovable for you to mull over.

1. Everything we see and perceive was created just 3.2495..... seconds ago. So, all the history books, fossil records to cosmic background radiation were not things that evolved over a period of time but created in situ.

2. We all live in a simulation. Could be that the simulators are also simulated ad infinitum...

3. Thol's conjectures about the nature of reality.

4. No one exists except Shan.

5. No one exists (this may be easy to disprove but not really. If you can get your hands on the book On Having No Head: Zen and the Rediscovery of the Obvious Douglas Harding, please read it in case you have not read it earlier. In it argues that none of us have have heads but have arms and legs and so on. He means this not figuratively but literally. It is very difficult to counter his arguments.

All of the above are self consistent. In case you wonder why I have not included science in this, it is not a self consistent system. So, it does not count.

Thol:

It is not enough to list arbitrarily made-up 'consistent' conjectures. We need to use our direct experience (the only given) and method-of-inference (logic, reason, intuition, simplicity, no or less assumptions, parsimony, verifiable by others using the same method...) to justify them. That is how you prove (get convinced) or disprove them.

This proof / disproof is of different class (category) from the empirical proof of scientific models. This class of proof is more real as the inference is made by each person. There is no need to learn higher mathematics or believe experts (as we do in scientific models).

By the way, I didn't mean 'the logical consistency' of my statements alone but also the method-of-inference.

Do you think your logically consistent conjectures (1 and 2) qualify to the above? I don't think so.

But in a way no. 1 can be seen (through) by each person that past, present and future all appear at this instant (moment) only. This is the direct experience (proof) without any assumption, conceptual musing etc. In fact, this is consistent with the 'block universe' which is the logical result (accepted by the scientific community) of Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (there is no space and time but only space-time).

I assert no. 3 qualifies.

No.4 is the logical conclusion if we follow the materialism that everything we perceive is the hallucination (copy of the supposed external world) within our brains. This is absurd and doesn't qualify to direct experience. Science (materialist metaphysics) is inconsistent precisely because of this. There may be other inconsistencies between its models like  standard model and quantum mechanics etc. Worth reading the following.

No. 5 - I have read and known about Douglas Harding's headless method. It may sound weird but it is as simple as 'lip cannot kiss itself' and 'finger tip cannot touch itself' and so on. In anthropological research there is a discussion about when we got our sense-of-self and one of the points is that it started only when we saw our face (head) in some reflective surface like water. It is in the book 'User Illusion'. I had written about this book (to you, maybe in 2006/2007/2008) many years ago.

The 'headless' experiment is supposed to work like Zen koans, to shock you out of your dream. We can ridicule headless experiment like we can Zen koans (for example, the clap of one hand). I would say it (headless experiment) is better than Zen koan and available to direct experience minus assumptions (that is a very big ask).

One can say it is weird that we want to ditch our direct experience and believe in inconsistent science (here I mean the materialist metaphysics mainly not empirically verified scientific models). Any inconsistencies between the models may be resolved as we make progress and changing the metaphysics will actually help that progress. An advaithi (they come in many flavours) can be a real friend of science, personal and social betterment and also a strong and effective enemy of organized religions, superstitions and all manner of exploitation.

When sometimes it is said 'no one exists' in these discussions, it means 'no separate entities' exist as we usually think. It is similar to saying this world is an illusion. It doesn't mean the world doesn't exist but it doesn't exist as we usually think - as a collection of separate objects; it only appears so. It is like saying a mirage is an illusion. But we see the mirage. It is there. But, it is not what we think (see as) it is (water).

We have to use the available (known) words to convey the new perspective but with a slight twist in the meaning.

Even in our day-to-day learning we build on what we learnt before. If we forget arithmetic we cannot do calculus. Similarly, we have to keep all the threads of our discussions in the mind to make sense and to 'see through' the game / play.

Thanks again Shan for triggering this output. From one side this can be viewed as 'Thol's conjectures about the nature of reality' in a personal way. But, from the other side, it can be seen as evolving in the interaction impersonally like any other natural process.

(Two Contexts and Two Perspectives)

(Two Contexts and Two Perspectives)

Many years ago, I had written the following (on 03-May-2007 to Shan) which is worth sharing.

There are two contexts and two perspectives.

Contexts: Relative and Absolute.
Perspectives: Separateness and Oneness.

There are four combinations.

Relative

Absolute

Separateness

(S-R) All the play with attachment, words can prove/disprove.

(S-A) inferring the oneness, words cannot prove / disprove, words can point; cannot practise, words will contradict, no resolution possible with mind,  mind has to give up.

Oneness

(O-R) All the play with

detachment, point of reference has shifted, no desire to be this or that but watching this or that happens on its own accord.

(O-A) Nothing can be said, silence; peace.

1. Relative-context: Day-to-day life of body-minds.

2. Absolute-context: Looking at the illusion of relative-context. This is not exactly correct. Both (1 & 2) are within the illusion. But, there is no other way to communicate unless we are able to strike direct transmission (this is also not correct as who / which will communicate to whom / which, when all-there-is is IT aka existence / nature / awareness).

Perspective-S: ‘I’ as a separate individual having volition.
Perspective-O: There are no individuals to have or be deprived of volition.

Perspectives can be called contexts. Contexts can be called perspectives. They are not clear cut categories. It is enough if we understand the basis.

Sometimes one may abide in O-R (keeping quiet internally and flowing with the world and observing with detachment). Other times one may lose oneself in S-R fully. Some other times under the influence of S-A, one may share some insights like this.

These contexts and perspectives come and go (in our thoughts and words). When it is said ‘words cannot prove anything conclusively’, it is said in ‘absolute’ context with ‘separateness’ perspective. But, words can prove / save life / hang a murderer under ‘relative’ context with ‘separateness’ perspective as well as ‘oneness’ perspective.

There is nothing new or great about these contexts and perspectives. They are just convenient (conceptual) labels to remind ourselves to make better sense of ourselves when discussing or thinking to ourselves.

Added now:

Mixing these context-perspectives will not help to communicate effectively. One may not agree with these context-perspectives. One may see only S-R in which case we will have to first show the contradictions within S-R and point to the raw experiences (without conceptual layer / interpretation) of S-R (using some helper concepts like oneness, advaita which have to be thrown away after use; no clinging to them) to intuit all the context-perspectives. Raw experience of S-R is the only reality. The issue (illusion) is only what we make of it, what we understand it as.

‘Every level of illusion has to be transcended by using another illusion at the same level’
    --Ramana Maharshi

Ultimately there is no separateness / oneness or relative / absolute. They all come into play only when there is apparent sense-of-separation. The sense-of-separation (that we are separate from existence / nature) is not right or wrong (as it is an expression of existence / nature or whatever IS) but now it is understood as real as a concept and not really (concrete) real as taken before which is the root cause of everything - all manifestation (names and forms) including fear, suffering, dis-ease....

Even 'concept' and 'concrete' are labels and false split; they all need to be thrown away after understanding which will bring us back to where we started the exploration (seeking) but now everything looks the same as before as well as totally different forever. This is liberation which is ever present; this is (free will) freedom from willing (desire)!

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
            - T.S.Eliot (English poet)

Universal Joke

2022-02-05

This is not the ‘soul’ of any individual person. This is the one impersonal field of awareness.

Even current physicalist scientists and philosophers (Daniel Dannett) claim free-will and self-consciousness are illusions, based on their version of interpretation of experimental results without realising the irony - who is saying this, who is self-conscious of saying this? Is this saying out of free will or predetermined?

First you create a false separation of I and the rest and then split the ‘I’ into body and mind (physical and non-physical) and ask all sorts of unanswerable and unnecessary questions (do we have free will, is self-consciousness real, where did we come from…) and produce contradicting and conflicting answers and above all feel that you are doing a very intelligent work and progressing science / mankind, if not improving the universe. We cannot but laugh at ourselves! Maybe that is the idea! Universal joke!!

Similar contradiction is in saying that evolution doesn’t have any goal (progress) and then talking about human beings accumulating knowledge and making progress (stone age, bronze age, agricultural age, industrial age, information age…). Have human beings somehow risen above evolution (natural process)? If this is not a belief in the supernatural, what is it? I am not making this up. Richard Dawkins (Author of Selfish Gene book) mentioned that ‘we humans alone have the capability to rise above our genes’. This is nothing but the religious concept of redemption hiding in rationality. Scientific blabberings are no less crazy than religious!

Science is an expression of nature and much more consistent, structured, intellectually exciting (albeit the underlying assumptions which cannot be proved) and useful but that is not the only valid domain of knowledge. Other domains (religion, spiritual, arts, literature, philosophy, metaphysics, politics, economics…) all have equal validity and usefulness as they are all expressions of the same nature/existence.

Validity and truth (right value) are not the same. Say in a database record of a person, in the field for date-of-birth a valid date (syntactically correct) may be stored but it may not be the correct value (semantically correct) of (DOB of) that person. Similarly science provides the right value in some context and other domains provide right values in other contexts. No frame of reference is absolute.

This is not the ‘soul’ of any individual person. This is the one impersonal field of awareness.
